5 Way Authors Sabotage Their Internet Sales

Despite all the work we put into marketing our books, little things count the most. Here are 5 ways I’ve seen many author sabotage their best efforts for online sales.

[1] They don’t take advantage of Amazon‘s programs. Amazon wants to make money off of you so they give you a lot of ideas to improve your sales. Tags, listmania, “So You” Guides, Author Connect Blogs, and much more all were developed to help you sell more books. And don’t forget to check back at least every few months to see what new things they’ve developes.

This software (which works with Photoshop) will create 3-d images of all your books (softcover, hardcover) CDs, DVDs in boxes, magazines and more. My sales have gone up considerably since using this software and it’s the only one I can find that makes the images in 300 dpi resolution, meaning you can use it in printed documents and (See an example to the right – this took about 30 seconds to make. I puchased Photoshop 7 off of Ebay for about $15 since I didn’t have it and it was required to run the software.)

[3] No “buy now” button. Make it EASY for people to find a button to actually purchase the book. Some of the most beautiful web sites lead you through three pages of more and more information about the book before you can finally locate a place to actually buy the book.

[4] No “sign up” box with a special offer. Even if you don’t have a newsletter authors should be collecting the emails and first names (and city/state is helpful too) of people who visit their web site so that you can send them information about your next book, signings you may be doing, publicity, etc. And don’t say, “To receive more information sign up here…” You need to offer them some little nugget for free. This could be a Top 10 list, a “special report” about 5 things not to do, a checklist, an essay, whatever you think would interest your readers.

[5] No links. Though you may not want to clog up your site with information other than your book, what list of links and resources would be helpful for your reader? Author web sites are not typically the kind of sites people bookmark. So make sure you have some kind of content that has to do with your book topic that is so worthwhile visitors won’t want to lose track of where it is at.

Last Wednesday night, I hosted a teleseminar with eight publishing professionals who are top editors and agents in different aspects of publishing. I was intentional about the mixture of people, publishers and types of writing. The teleseminar was completely unscripted and I know a brand-new experience for several of my publishing friends.

Let’s face reality. These publishing experts are busy and hard to reach. I asked each one to spend ten minutes with me on the phone talking about one book proposal or manuscript which attracted them from the beginning. I also asked each one to point out one of the key errors writers make when they approach them. Each of these eight people had the same questions and our conversation was completely unscripted. If you listen to the call, you will see each person arrived at a specific time. And then we talked and they said good night. After the call, I sent each of the speakers the edited teleseminar so they could hear their colleagues (if they wanted to do so).

In addition, I asked each of them to send any document they had about creating an excellent book proposal or pitch. Not everyone had something to send but I compiled the material into a study guide to be used in advance of the teleseminar. It turned out to be 65 pages of excellent advice and insight for writers of all levels of experience.

While I’ve been in publishing for over twenty years, I was amazed at what happened during this teleseminar with eight different perspectives. Each person brought a different type of proposal. Some of them referred to a nonfiction book proposal and others talked about a fiction manuscript. Each one pointed out a different aspect that attracted them and brought value to the overall experience. Also each one pointed out a different error or mistake that many writers make when they approach them. The result was something with broad appeal in the book publishing landscape. It wasn’t focused on the Christian market (some of it is) nor totally focused on the general book market (some of it is).

National e-Book Conference In Portland, OR, March 6-9, 2008

Portland, OR (PRWEB) January 8, 2008 — Grab your umbrella and favorite electronic reading device (a laptop or PDA will do) and head to the great Pacific Northwest for the 8th annual EPIC conference, “It’s Not Easy Being E,” in Portland, Oregon, March 6-9, 2008, at the Lloyd Center Doubletree Inn. EPIC, the Electronically Published Internet Connection, is a professional organization for published and contracted e-book and print authors. Established in 1997, EPIC was one of the first advocates of electronic publishing, and has been a strong voice for the industry ever since. Its members write and publish in all literary and non-fiction genres.

Testimonials From "Real" People Count!

When collecting your testimonials or “blurbs” for your book make sure to not have all of them be from experts.  Yes, a well-known celebrity can add a bit of sparkle to your sales sheet.  For example, who wouldn’t want a quote about your new adoption scrapbook album from Angelina Jolie?

Testimonials from experts and celebrities catch the attention of both media like radio producers as well as your audience of potential readers. They will think, “Wow! That’s nice that she was able to get a recommendation from her. That took some effort. Must be a decent book.”

And it will add credibility that the book isn’t a real flop.

But in my opinion, it’s the average reader who will influence a person to buy the book.

Which blurb would make you want a book?

One by Stephen King that says…

“Intriguing. Excellent read.”

Or a testimonial from Suzy that says…

“Your book completely turned my life upside down—or should I say, ‘right side up?’ I’ve made so many changes in both my actions and my attitudes and it’s improved my health, my relationships—everything! Thank you for helping me get my life back!”

Stephen King’s remark is nice, but it doesn’t make me think I need this book. Suzy’s review makes me think “I need this book so I can get my life back too!”

Don’t cover your books front and back covers with just vague endorsements from celebrities. Be sure to add at least one “real person’s” testimonial that will make the shopper think, “This person sounds just like me and if this book helped her (or entertained her) it will help me too.”

Sign up for a book swap web site and give your books away in return for book credits. Many of these web sites have a listing of “most recently added” so even if you are not a well-known author, you may just find some extra readers. I use www.paperbackswap.comOther authors have said that they purchase books at a low cost that are a similar style to their own. When someone “buys” it, the author also includes a copy of her book for free. When people receive the books they have the option to write you a note. You may want to mention that you’d appreciate any review they can offer, especially on Amazon.com.

Where Do Authors Fit In The Trends of Marketing and Publishing?

In a recent survey sponsored by the organizers of the 2007 Frankfurt Book Fair in October the industry was asked where the major areas of growth are for the industry in the coming years. They responded with the following:

  1. 44 percent of respondents identified the use of e-books
  2. 41 percent identified audiobooks, many of which are now available as downloads
  3. As the world becomes increasingly globalized, 27 percent of respondents saw books in translation (much of the business of the Frankfurt Book Fair) as a growth area.
  4. 27 percent identified educational publishing

Tom Masters, of Future Perfect Publishing makes the following predictions. Although these are just personal opinions, as an author who is promoting his or her own books, each opinon should be taken into consideration and how it does or could impact you. I’ve highlighted some important facts authors should be aware of, in my opinion.

  • More publishing will not undermine the market for books.  To the contrary, it will expand it into new areas.  Though the market will continue to fragment into ever finer niches and sub-niches, we will find ever more efficient ways to aggregate the fragments.

>>>> I agree whole-heartedly! People are much more able to find exactly the kind of information they want quickly and then expand to broaden their vision and needs. In the past, one had to find the general subject and try to adapt it to your situation.

  • e-books will continue to in sales, but like audio books, will remain a small part of the overall publishing market.

>>>> Ebooks give people a different kind of information. I buy a lot of informational ebooks. Some are amazing and stuffed full of information that would have taken me years to compile if I even had the time. Some are a waste of money. But the average book-buyer is a different audience than the ebook buyer. As internet marketing increases and everyone tries to figure out how to get rich, ebook sales will continue to grow. Audio books likely will stay in the loop due to all our digital gadgets like ipods.

  • The printed book, far from being eclipsed by digital media, will become a type of digital media itself – think e-paper and conductive ink – and attain a new coolness factor.

>>>> I never had a desire for an iphone. But as someone who reads 2-3 books per week, I am trying to tell myself I want the new Amazon Kindle because it’s practical. Okay, I’ll admit it. I want to be the cool one too. One of the first authors to show it to my friends and say, “See how easy this is? You can carry 300 books at once!” (Like they’d ever want 300 books.)

I think the sales of Amazon’s Kindle (and their “out of stock status” despite the $399 price factor) backs this up! I know I want one. And after seeing Sony’s version at Borders today and realizing how amazing the non-glare screen is, I’m sold! I just need to budget for it now.

  • The hand-wringing over literacy will turn out to be misguided, much as each generation’s hand-wringing over evolving language usage patterns of younger generations.

  • Authors will become more important than publishers and the various elements of the traditional book marketing machine.  Savvy authors will use the Internet both as a vehicle to build an audience while they develop their work, and  as a tool to generate low cost, but highly effective market buzz and book sales.

>>>> Did you see that key word there? SAVVY authors… that’s what it’s all about, friends. There are millions of authors, but the savvy ones will sell books, the others will give them to grandma to pass out to her friends. That’s why blogs like this are so important–so we can all share and compare what works and what doesn’t. We want to make the Internet work for us, not the other way around.

  • During the next decade or two, we will see the end (or the substantial diminshing) of physical book distribution and the end of book returns.  In combination with better analytics for selecting and managing titles, this will make book publishing a highly profitable business.

Marketing plans are great guides for business owners. And a book marketing plan is the specific tool you will use to find and create places to sell your book(s).

Consider these six areas when developing your marketing plan.

  1. The Audience: Who did I write this book for? Make sure you narrow your focus and target specific groups. Try to network with networks instead of one-on-one.
  2. The Product: What kind of book is this? Check out your competition; see what the latest trends are with books similar to yours. One current trend is to sell your how-to book at the end of free how-to teleseminars.
  3. The Price: How will I price my book? Make sure you don’t price your book too high. Again research your competition (and/or your friends!) to find out what books like yours sell for. I’ve seen lots of POD (print on demand) books outrageously priced because of the high cost per book to the author. I can’t imagine they are selling many books when their competitors are selling similar books at half the price. Remember that printing larger quantities on your own allows you to achieve higher profits per book.
  4. The Packaging: How will I design and package my book? Packaging makes all the difference and is the most fun to plan! This is where I get creative and try to incorporate what I love most about the different books that I buy. Make your packaging passionate!
  5. The Promotion and Publicity: What promotional methods will I use to sell my book? This is another fun and creative area to plan. A few words of advice: Be unusual and different because this creates buzz and free publicity. Make sure to combine your unusual promotional techniques with steadfast long-term tactics too. I love to do seasonal off-the-wall stuff, yet I always have ads running consistently where I know my customers will see me.
  6. The Distribution: How will my customer purchase my book? You must have a website that features you and your book(s). Writers try to tell me all the time that they just don’t need a website. That maintaining it takes time away from their creativity. If you aren’t networking with networks (in this case the entire world) then you are working much harder than you have to. Of course you can distribute via traditional markets such as bookstores and gift stores, but what sounds more efficient to you? Don’t think of having a website as an option. Consider it a great way to connect with your customers and really have control over your marketing plan.

You can help out someone who is fighting for the USA by donating books to soldiers. According to HelpaSoldier.org, the sixth most-requested item from soldiers serving in foreign countries is books. (Peanut butter ranks number one, lotion number two.) Organizations like Books For Soldiers and Operation Paperback provide soldiers with reading material.

Also Wounded Warrior at accepts new books to give to men and women of the U.S armed forces who have been severely injured during the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations around the world.
